Closing her eyes tightly, she forced out all thoughts of her beloved little Sachi. Another numbing fear gripped her— where was Koki?

Suiko looked at the frantic people pushing toward them. Hiroshi was right. She inhaled deeply, squaring her shoulders and reaching for Itoko. "It's all right, Mother," she said with all the forced calm she could muster. "It's all right." It was the first time she had ever held the advantage over her headstrong mother-in-law and it didn't even matter. Tightly holding Itoko's hand, she turned anxiously to Hiroshi. "Isn't there something we can do?"

Another deafening explosion sounded from outside. "Not yet," he replied loudly. "But I'd better think about getting back to headquarters. I've got a hunch the army's going to be extremely busy."

Itoko shook off her crippling fear and grabbed his arm. ''No! You can do more good here!" she insisted. Pointing to the milling, frightened people hemming them in, she pleaded, "Look! You can take charge."

Hiroshi nodded, knowing she might be right. He went back to the main desk.

Koki was four blocks from the hotel when the shock began. First, the view through his windshield began to vibrate. Then the new Buick started to jump and buck like an unbroken horse. He saw a building collapse to his left, heard the loud noises and saw the horrified looks of terrified people in the streets as their distorted features swam around him. Fighting the wheel, he tried to get his foot on the elusive brake.

A motorcycle with a wild-eyed driver smashed into his front fender and went flying past. A moment later, a truck sideswiped him from the left and careened away. Everything in sight was bouncing and vibrating crazily as he tried frantically to stop. People were everywhere. He shouted futilely as a woman with a baby fell in front of the car. He was frozen in horror. The wall of a four-story building crumpled to his right front, smashing pieces into the hood and right side of his cracked windshield. Swerving left, the Buick ran up over a downed telephone pole and slammed to a stop, its front wheels still spinning. Koki stared in horror at the live, sizzhng electric wire that fell toward him. The last sound he heard was the brassy blare of the Buick's stuck horn.

Hiroshi broke away from his mother and Suiko at 12:35. He had been unable to call anywhere from the hotel's switchboard, so he guessed all intracity telephone lines were out of commission. Organizing relief
